Interpreting Meaning in Wolf Pencil Drawings

There's always decision making before you start your new art work, one of the most important points are: what "meaning" you will give to your wolf drawings.

So I have picked some examples of wolf pencil drawings that we can have a look at and discuss.

So let's get started shall we........

When drawing, you would never think of just how many different styles of drawing types there really are.

Does this make us a bit uneasy when faced with such a broad decision. Or does it make us feel that it's like a chocolate factory out there, and just how diverse pencil drawing really is.

Well.... art has never been boring, and when mixed with imagination, how can you not become excited at the prospect of creating another piece of art.  Your art! something you are going to bring into the world, not only for your pleasure, for other people as well.

Doesn't that give you a sense of power in some way, some sort of knowing that you can bring about something of expression that will enlighten all  people that see it.

Every artist here is different in their own style, and have given something of themselves in their art.

This is turn shows a little of each artist; almost like a signature in some sort of way, just like different peoples hand writing.

Let's not go into the study of graphology ( the study of hand writing) though....

Let's have a look here at the first drawing, what do you see?

The first thing that strikes me is the lengthy height of the wolves here, their legs are slender and long.

The use of pencil texture is defined within their lines, and the drawing concentrates on the wolf subjects alone. I see curious wolves here, approaching. Yet are they approaching with menacing intent, or are they just approaching with curiosity.

"As a child I dew like Raphael but it has taken me a lifetime to draw like a child."

~ Pablo Picasso (1881 - 1873)

Does this drawing have you wondering too, or did you see something different.

Here we have a different use of pencil style and interpretation in wolf pencil drawings.

What do you see that the artist here is trying to convey with their drawing?

I see a sense of domination of one wolf over another.

The uncertain stance of each wolf shows an uneasy encounter here, and I am not sure if the outcome is going to be a positive one, or one that might end in a fight.

Let's keep going here till  we get to the last drawing so we can talk about our observations of these wolf pencil drawings.

Here I see a wolf with uncertainty in it's eyes.

And because of this, I start to wonder what the story is about.

Why is this wolf uncertain, and what has made the wolf this way.

The mingling of textures are rich and accentuate the wolf's look, and the way the light hits it's features only helps the onlooker to question more of wolf pencil drawings such as this.

Can you see how the use of such dramatic and rich textures and shades have only added to the wolfs overall look.

I think this has worked very well, and the artist has put much thought into how they were to present this wolf drawing to it's best capacity.

Are we starting to see just how differently, such diverse styles of pencil drawing can effect a whole spectrum of drawing as an art in itself?

OK, onto the next. I particularly like this drawing, not for it's use of style, but the way the artist has portrayed the effect of the wolves laying in the snow. Yet can we see any indication of the snow?

Hardly..... most of the effect is created in how the wolf has been drawn, or the lack of how much the wolf has been drawn in.

I find that this wolf pencil drawing gives out a sense of peace as well as comfort. I can feel the cold, not only in this indication of snow, I also feel it in the way the artist has used light tones and textures to emit a cold environment.

Now we have a group of wolves in the drawing below. Wolf pencil drawings such as this is very possible with just the sole use of our humble lead pencil.

See the use of very crisp lines done with a very sharp pencil, probably looking towards a pencil grading of B2, which will give you this intense black color. The only thing when using  such a pencil such as this, is that it is a quite a soft pencil, so you will have to keep sharpening it as you draw. Being soft, it will wear down very quickly.

This same pencil might have been used to create the mist like texture around the wolf drawing itself. By placing the pencil on it's side and dragging it along lightly over the papers surface so to bring out the grain of the paper underneath.

This pencil drawing has a soft feel about it, which only adds to the sense of mist or closing in of darkness

The scene feels comforting and relaxed in so many ways here.

The artists choice of style is well chosen to get the best reaction from their on lookers.

The textures have calmed me, and have also softened me in how I might have interpreted it from the first time I saw it. Even though this wolf drawing does not indicate warmth, it emits a feeling from me that, even cool in it's intended atmosphere, is very comforting.

Many different wolf pencil drawings on many different levels. Levels that bring out instant emotions and feelings. And as you take the time to look further into each drawing, the emergence of a story shows itself as you interpret many of the subtle indicated signs in what the artist is trying to convey in their art drawings.

Now you might have had different feelings towards these wolf pencil drawings, and that's OK, as we are all individuals. I am showing you what these drawings are bringing out in myself. Because I want to to see that the choices you make in your drawings are a fine line in how well you will project your intensions out towards the public, and how they will interpret them.

The use of: style, texture and subject matter in how they are set in a drawing all equals up to just how effective you will convey your drawing to the outside world.

We have seen many different styles of wolf pencil drawings here, and the different choices in which style the artist has chosen for what sort of scene they are drawing at the time.

Being aware of these factors are an integral leap up the artistic ladder in conveying what is in your mind, and how you want the public to see your drawings. So I would encourage you to think about these choices and how you choose them, that of which you might otherwise not have considered.
