The Beauty of Wolf Art

Wolf Art:

Wolves have been a fascination since man can remember, also knowing that the wolf is the distant ancestor of the dogs of today, gives us that connection to our domestic everyday companion "the dog".

We have a special; almost primeval connection with them.

When art comes in this particular form of art, what do we feel. I know that for myself it symbolizes a sense of freedom, a wildness that is hard to explain.

So why do we feel so drawn to these elements of nature? is it the feeling of what we, as a people, once were, a longing of freedom that strikes a chord in everyone of us.

So what does this mean to the artist, when they have chosen to do a piece of art work of the wolf.

Can any other dog make us feel that urgency to bring this wolf , wolf art to life on canvas as well as in sculpture, as much as the wolf does.

I don't think so.

The Gamekeepers ~ Phillip Allder

I remember when drawing the wolf art as a child, and I still feel the majesty of the wolf a I did then.

It's never left me, and maybe its the same for you.

If you were to choose to paint, or to draw or sculpt the wolf. What sort of subject would you do? a wolf sleeping, in action or just with the pack of other wolves.

This is a good question, now lets think about the wolf sleeping for one moment.

The wolf is stationary, no movement, yet even in this state of rest the wolf is going to evoke some powerful reaction in feelings from its onlookers.

Why? even when asleep, the wolf symbolizes a sense of freedom and interest.

So don't always think that just because you are going to do a piece of art work that you have to bring action into it.

True, there are going to be subjects that need that little bit of help when need to be in a state or position of interest in order for the art lover to take notice.

Not every animal can have the same reaction as the wolf does on man.

You cannot really go wrong when choosing a subject such as wolf art.

In wolf art, just remember it's your responsibility to achieve that likeness of the wolf to the onlooker, come and see how to Draw the Wolf for yourself

After all..... the subject you have chosen is for a reason. The wolf evokes such a passion in most of us, so with this in mind, you need to capture its character and form the best you can.

Underdog ~ Phillip Allder

In wolf art, think about this for one moment, what if the wolf had a short coat, do you think that you would feel the same.

The wolf's stream lined form, its long think shaggy coat and intelligent look is the symbol of what we know is wolf.

Without these strengths of character we would not define the wolf for what it is.

Now can you see that getting these main features in wolf  art right, can only spell success for you as an artist when you create your own art of the wolf.

Have a look at these lovely paintings by the artist Phillip Allder. You can see that he has captured these characteristics of the wolf in his own right.

So what do you feel when you look at these paintings, does it bring out the enthusiasm in you. Does it portray all that the wolf is in art.

Sometimes, not the easiest lesson learned for an artist, but once you have grasped what you need to, and take all those strengths of your subject into consideration, you are going to end up with a finished piece of art work that not only brings with it, the passion in you, transferred to canvas or three dimensional form.

You are going to transfer these feelings to your potential buyers in the art field as well

Learn this lesson early, and don't go and take any short cuts.

Homework is a must when starting a new piece of art, and with the subject you are going to do, you need to work out for yourself, what this subject is going to do for you as an artist.

"On the floor I am more at ease. I feel nearer, more a part of the painting, since this way I can walk around it, work from the four sides and literally be in the painting."~
Jackson Pollock

And if you don't feel comfortable with how you are portraying your subject, as with the wolf.

Do you think that any one else out there is going to feel any different.

Not all your initial layouts of a subject are going to work first time. If it feels wrong then change it.

You will start to get a feel for what is right, and how you have positioned your wolf within it's surroundings.

Does the action of the wolf bring out the best in your art? these are all sorts of questions you will face and need to answer yourself.

If you are not sure, then leave you work for a while and come back to see it with a fresh look. Stand back from it and then come closer. Viewing your own art from all ways and directions will help you make up your own mind.
