Wet in Wet Experiments with Watercolour

Wet-In-Wet Experiments with Watercolour:

I feel that these experiments will help you in creating all kinds of atmospheric effects, that will just show you how versatile watercolour can really be....

Were talking about such effects as creating atmospheric styles, all the way to sky and even clouds. As you will need these in any scene you do.

Right..... by experimenting with these exercises, will give you added confidence when tackling more major areas of working with watercolour; using your added confidence to boldly work with your paints in a semi-abstract way.

Paint colour variations on damp paper:

Now that you have splashed some different paint onto your wet paper, you can see how the paint starts to bleed, running along with the already wet paper.

Your colours will also run into each ether which is fine. Then as the paper starts to dry, I want you to use a sponge - lifting sections of paint off the paper.

You can also use:

  • Blotting Paper

  • Soft Tissues

  • Toilet Paper

  • Scrunched up Materials

Here are some Watercolor Supplies for you to buy.

Also try painting in more colours to the dry areas on your paper, where the paint will no longer run.

You an also try painting some bright strong colours onto damp paper and get an idea by watching how strong colours and water interact together.

Tilting Your Paper:

Another trick is when you have added paint to your damp paper, try tilting your paper 90degrees and see how the paint interacts together with the water when it runs in one direction.

You can also try tilting the paper in more than one direction to make patterns as well.

Paint in one Colour:

Try painting in one single colour, then remove some of the pigment by re-wetting a patch with water and lifting out the colour with a squeezed out, clean paint brush.

If not a brush, I would also suggest the crumpled up tissue effect, by laying it down and blotting. You will see a wash effect emerge. Just as you might have seen on interior decoration ideas in some magazines.

In doing these exercises, you will be able to experiment and find out different ways of using such ideas on future paintings.

It gives you more confidence, and by just doing these ideas separately. You don't mind - its not like you are trying this sort of idea for the first time on one of your paintings.

Because if it goes wrong, you will not be a happy bunny.

With separate exercises such as these, you will go forth with vigour and not really care if it works out or not. That's how I want you to experiment.

And, as a suggestion............

You might keep some of these experiments in a sort of scrap book to refer back to in the future. When you are looking for ideas for your future works, reference wise.
