Different Watercolor Painting Techniques

Different Watercolor painting techniques:

We have discussed water color before, and now I want to talk more about the boundaries that you can stretch yourself  with, when we are thinking of color choices and how they will enhance your watercolor art.

I have two watercolor painting examples here from two different artists; each with completely different color choices, and both very effective in driving across just how well different watercolor painting techniques can visually effect our perception of a painting.

Everything has color, what ever we look at in nature there is always more than one color.

Here on this page we are looking at two different examples where both paintings have broken the natural field of color in the natural world.

Lets have a look at the watercolor painting  techniques of the lion firstly......

The artist has chosen to work with only one color, now with watercolor being translucent in effect, can become many different shades of the one color when used.

All that is needed is the amount of water the artist uses to dilute the color even further. And because of the translucent qualities of watercolor you can see the transparency of the paper right through the very diluted areas of  watercolor paint itself.

Here are some Watercolor Supplies for you to buy.

I personally like to see paintings done with just one color, this overall theme is very effective and when it comes to watercolor painting effects, you have the best combination to really apply the diversity of this paint to its fullest as you see here in this lion painting.

Notice also, how the color has not completely covered our lion subject, there are indications of color painted in as shading, and from one side of the color scale to the other; from the very black undiluted tone to the different gradation of black as it has been diluted by the artist.

Creating an effect that I can say is nothing but noble and so natural in appearance, congratulations to the artist here.

When it comes to working with colors, or color combinations that don't follow the natural rules of nature, you as an artist have to work harder.

For it is you who has to choose where and when to apply these colures and how. If it is just one color and its many different shades, to colures that you wouldn't normally see in nature.

One of the most difficult things to do is to paint darkness which nonetheless has light in it.

~Vincent van Gogh

You are the one who has to use you own judgment in where you will use these colures and that it will work with your painting. You have nothing to fall back on except your own skills as an artist and the observations you have taken on in the past.

These all come into play, and it is usually the more experienced artist who tackles these such paintings. Why?

Because they have the necessary experience, and yes their observations and skills that they have built up through their years as an artist.

But you can learn from them and use their watercolor painting techniques as your own. This is also called observation - yet this time your are observing how other artists have tackled these techniques. We all learn of each other. And experienced artist can still learn of armature artists.... yes its true.....

Here we have a close up of a zebra (one of our horse cousins)  all colures of this zebra are natural except for the blue.

This introduction of the blue color has brought a domineering feature to this subject. In fact the whole painting.

Its not the more subtle brownish colures that dominate here, its the blue that shines brightly out of this painting as the more dominant and startling color.

Normally such an effect doesn't belong, and  the thought of adding such a color would unnerve some artists. But it is the watercolor painting technique that has made this color work so well on this painting.

Watercolor has the ability of merging so well with its background, that a strong color such a blue blends in so well. You will also notice how the blue has been diluted so much and added as the overall background, a nice finishing touch I think....

The imagination is a wonderful thing, it takes us beyond reality, and we can express this visually in art so that we can share our visions with other people.

Watercolor painting techniques not only touch the areas of infusion of colures, colures that might not necessarily work well with each other, are challenging areas in what can and cannot be when we want a different sort of painting.

But don't want to step too far over the boundaries, and this is where watercolor paints are going to work for you.
