Painting Tutorials without a Brush

Painting Tutorials without a Brush:

Here we are with some old exercises I did when I was learning art, you could say this is the extension of the other page I have done on Painting Lessons with a Brush.

As the other page here concentrated on what could be done with the brush. This exercise concentrates on what can be achieved without the brush.

We use the brush for most applications when painting on a surface, so what about leaving the brush on the side for a minute and think about what can be achieved without the use of a brush in these painting tutorials.

If your thinking like myself, you would be thinking that not painting with a brush is not traditional. I think in some way... we all have this underlying thought. To try and explain it..... would be a bit difficult, as I'm sure you feel the same with me here.

Can you think of one such tool that is not a brush and used in many paintings?  any ideas....

One such tool that I have used throughout the years and is an accepted painting tool is the "pallet knife" the pallet knife comes in many different sizes and also some different shapes. Not only used in painting applications, it is very much used in the mixing of paints.

Effects without a Brush

I have used it for years, I am sure that you have heard of pallet knife paintings.

Many paintings such as these have been applied without the use of thinning out the paints, by directly applying the paints onto a surface, leaving ridges where the pallet knife has applied them, resulting in surfaces that create added depth of a painting with its graven surfaces.

Other materials you can use for such effects without a brush are:

         - Ocean Artist Sponges 4/Pkg 3 Medium Wool Sponges + Jumbo  Sponge R2090, 3 Item(s)/Order

Don't just think that the painting you are going to do has to be applied with just the brush alone.

In painting tutorial, have a good look at what things you are going to put into your painting and think what effects you could add with other such objects that might enhance your painting even better than the brush alone.

Don't be scared to add different effects to your painting by using many different objects to achieve the results you truly desire.

Have a good look at the different effects that I have achieved by using just a few different objects, and think of creating your own page of experimentation's as I have above for these painting tutorials.

It not only opens up a self awareness at what can be achieved, it also makes you go right back to the start of forming patterns and dabbling with structure.

We can get caught up in all the complexity of our art work and stepping right back like this. Refreshes us in our self achievement in just what we can conjure up with pure experimentation.

And references like this are great to go back to when you want to re-create a pattern that you not only have achieved before, you want to add it to a painting you are doing at that time because it's going to really set that painting off.

These are very good exercises for the amateur artist and the experienced artist as well and all will benefit from doing it.
