Starting a Lion Pencil Drawing

Lion Pencil Drawing:

Some people are nervous about using ideas from photos.

They feel that if you are going to be an artist, you need to create a work of art from your own imagination.

I wish that was the case..........

But in true reality that is not true, like other artists in the arts - they draw their ideas and inspiration from other areas. Like song writers... there are three sections of a song: the start, the middle, and the end.

Now they can get inspiration from other peoples songs, and when their own song is put together. It becomes an original. That's how its mainly done....

This also applies with the drawing of your art subject, you might feel guilty about using the "grid drawing system" of staring a drawing.

I want to show you a perfect example of a experienced artist who is using a grid drawing system to start off their drawing of a lion.

Have a look at this artists drawing, which will end up as a lion pencil drawing. Can you see the faint lines of the grid drawn upon the paper.

Obviously the artist has taken this subject of the lion from maybe a photo.

And so that the lion pencil drawing comes out right, proportion wise.

The artist has drawn a grid over the original photo, or used a clear film with a grid drawn on it. And placed the clear paper over the photo.

These are two of the ways you can put a grid on top of your favoured subject.

Now, once the grid is drawn "lightly" and I do stress lightly. Because you want the lines light enough so that you can comfortably draw over them without hampering the overall drawing of the lion.

So I want you to get that silly feeling in your mind  to disappear when it comes to using grid drawing to get that right proportion.

Say you do decide not to use the grid drawing technique, and you aren't the best a getting your proportions right. And there are some artists out there where proportion is not their strong point, and it not easy.

Every artist will struggle with getting proportion right at some point or the other.

I am very good when it comes to getting proportions right in my art, but there are times when I also slip up, and the grid drawing technique will take away of those mistakes. Its always here as a back-up if I need it.

Now you can see how this artist has started to draw in the detail of the line pencil drawing, and what beautiful work it is too.....

If an experienced artist such as this can use the line grid technique to get their drawing proportionally right. You can too.

"Pioneers did not produce original works of art, because they were creating original human environments; they did not imagine Utopias because they were shaping them."

~George Woodcock

In one way, if you do use the line grid technique, proportions something you don't have to worry yourself with, as you can then apply your thoughts to filling in the overall detail.

So here is the lion pencil drawing nearing its completion, and the grid lines erased out where necessary. There are no trace of the straight grid lines.

Remember, keep the lines light and don't press too hard on the papers surface when drawing the lines in.

Or you will pick up the lines faintly on a lighter background, and pencil has a knack of showing deep groves on a surface the darker you apply your pencil coloration's.

So, in a way, if you can apply grid lines properly and professionally onto your art work, you are using a fairly easy technique expertly.

This lion pencil drawing is tribute, that experienced artists of this calibre are not taking chances with their own art work, use what best suits you and thrive in your own art drawings and paintings.
