Learn to Draw

Learn to draw:

  • Drawing (verb) is the act of making marks on a surface so as to create an image, form or shape.

If you look in the dictionary, you may find a reference like this above, a good plain description of the logical mind. It is to the artist, that uses their right side of their brain, for all artistic creativity. Would beg to differ with the left side of the brains such logical description of drawing.

Drawing is the fundamental basics of putting your imagination and creativity on a surface. And there has been many different surfaces used in the history of drawing. From stone walls in caves through to papers of today.

We are going to look into the fundamentals of drawing and what it means. Yes... were going back to the very basics in learn to draw. I feel that to understand what you are working with, are the necessitates of beginning your journey with drawing. If you are a seasoned artist, it is always an advantage to understand the psychology of the medium your have chosen to work with.

In this case we are looking a drawing. Sure... we could start with drawing lessons in learn to draw. Though I want too talk about what is necessary to achieve a drawing. I want to go deeper. To show you what it is like for an artist, how they feel, and what motivates them to become the artists they are.

When we think of photos, from color to black and white,

which was all we had at the beginning of photography. Ok, we prefer color photos today, because that are more natural to us. We see color in our lives all the time. Take a moment to think how the black and white photo has created a brilliance in two tones, that make some photos stand out better than some color photos.

This is the same with drawing, I have seen some wonderful drawings, they are so natural. If you stand back from them, they almost look indistinguishable from natural life subjects.

To learn to draw involves shapes, lines and shades of color.

"I never saw an ugly thing in my life: for let the form of an object be what it may, - light, shade, and perspective will always make it beautiful ." ~ John Constable.

Working with the pencil right now - we are looking at one color being the medium graphite. When you learn to draw and put pressure on your pencil - this determines how dark the color becomes on the surface you are drawing. The use of shade and light mixed together gives the overall impression of contours, shapes and even transparency. We use the color of the surface we are using, to complement the drawing. Say, a white surface is used in such a way that no outer lines are drawn in some drawings. Yet the use of shading and working with the surface gives the appearance of the outer shape you are drawing. Just like the example of this artists work below.

The artists ability to see what is in front of them, and transfer this image to paper. Or from within their minds is really something. I still wonder in amazement when I see some of the finest works coming out from artists from all walks of life. Do you find this strange.... because I am an artist, it does not mean that as artists, we are not inspired by works from our fellow artists.

Indeed, it is the whole network of artists that are like a secret group. We draw ideas from each other, we are kept going by each others different ideas, styles and new discoveries. We, as artists, never stop learning. And that is one thing that keeps the passion and enthusiasm alive in us all, to strive better and discover ourselves in the whole process.

Artist - Geoff Dawson

It is a journey that we follow, not always the easiest. Though the most rewarding. If you think that we just turn out pieces of our art work without not feeling the frustration, the doubt, the days that we just need time away from your art. You would be sadly mistaken.

From a non-artists point of view. They might see a piece of work and say " I don't want to pay that much for this art". And one reason for this is because art is mass produced these days, and also the non-artist does not understand the work that goes into creating the work they are seeing or buying. They even think its easy for the artist to spit one piece of work out after the other Yet some artist out there had to create this work, put a part of their soul into the work they have created.

Artists are in a group of their own.... It can be lonely sometimes, though most fulfilling, and we would not change

it. So if you want to join the special elite, or just want to be a part of the artists world. You need to know a bit of what's going on  inside the artists mind.

So, drawing is the basics of art, when it comes to painting, sketching, pastel work, I could go on. Realizing that you need to start from this point, will save you allot of time in the future. Learn the basics and then, you can graduate onwards and upwards.

This is one of my chosen books for drawing. I would recommend that if you choose a book in drawing. To consider this one. You can never have enough books. You Should see my library on art...
