How to Draw Wolves

How to Draw Wolves:

The wolf is one subject that I know inspires me... and I am not alone. These wild and majestic animals bring out the imagination of true wild behaviour that we like to look at and create in our art work.

Have you seen just how popular the wolf is in art? you see the wolf everywhere.

And of course, they are very much depicted with the Native American Indian. Being a very important symbol in the Indians life right back in history.

I cannot think of a better subject than the wolf to capture natures wild beauty at its best when it comes to doing a member of the dog family. And the wolf is the original dog when you think about it.....

Now, in how to draw wolves, I have show you how to get the dogs overall proportional form in our first lesson in "drawing the basic stick figure of the overall dogs frame". You can get there by following these links How to Draw Dogs from How to Draw Wolves

Using this method - you will then have your wolfs proportional figure done. Have a careful look at the frame, and make sure that the wolves proportions are OK.

  • If you don't get the proportions right, you will have to go back to step one.

I have done these mistakes time and time again, when I have become swept away with drawing, only to find out that the proportions were all wrong. And have had to start all over again, grrrrr!.

It's very frustrating indeed, and to start from scratch is not an enthusiasm builder. Now when you choose a subject, lets say you have seen a photo of a wolf that you like, and have decided to draw.

Study it, get it ingrained into your mind. I spend allot of time just looking at my next subject of work I that I am going to do.  You could be watching television at night and have the photo near you, keep having a look at it.

What this does is familiarize you with the form; the picture itself. It seems to register in your brain and makes the whole process of drawing a whole lot easier.

Now I have drawn a starting point for you. You can see the stick figure I have drawn the proportion lines from an artists sketch of a wolf above.

This gives you the starting point of where you will position your wolf on the paper. Also giving you the ideal proportions on how to draw wolves.

When you are satisfied with this, you can start to fill out the body of the wolf. You can see here that I have marked in heavy lines the guide lines around the stick figure.

You will probably need time to get this right, this is why I have not drawn the whole outside form.

And you see how I have given myself anchors for the overall form in how to draw wolves.

When you are satisfied with this. Only then; you can start to fill out the details.

See how I have make a mark up near the wolves snout where the finish of the wolves head will be. A straight outside line is all you will need.

Remember that these are guide lines, and keep the rubber at the ready. Because you are going to need it. There will be allot of rubbing out before you feel that you are satisfied with the outside form work of your wolf.

Now I have been an artist for a long time, and I keep the rubber near to me at all times.

I have seen some artists who have not used a rubber in their art work, though... these artists have been training themselves hard on their specific subject for a long time.

There is no margin for errors, and if they make some, they can manipulate their mistakes, or just have to scrap the whole drawing and start again. These artists who specialize, say in horses, that's all they do.

If you are an all round artist, you don't have the time to master all subjects and forms.

So practice doing the exercise that I have shown you here. You may want to start with this picture first.

Then graduate on to find your own picture and follow thought with the same steps. "Rome wasn't built in one day" so its going to take practice. And you will find it easier as you gain your confidence and your skills in how to draw wolves.
