How to draw Wolves
How to Draw Wolves:
The wolf is one subject that I know inspires me. And I am
not alone. These wild and majestic animals bring out the imagination of true
wild behavior that we like to look at and create in our art work.
Have you seen just how popular the wolf is in art? you see
them everywhere. And of course, they are very much depicted with the Native
American Indian. Being a very important symbol in the Indians life's, right
back in history.
I cannot think of a better subject than the wolf to capture
natures wild beauty at its best when doing a member of the dog family.
And they were the original dog when you think of it.....
Now,in how to draw wolves, I have show you how to get the dogs proportional form,
in our first lesson in drawing the basic stick figure of the overall dogs
frame.
Go to How to Draw Dogs from how to draw wolves
Using this method - you will then have your wolfs
proportional figure set, how you want to draw it. Have a careful look at the
frame, and make sure that the proportions are ok.
I have done this time and time again, where I have
become swept away in drawing a subject - only to find out the proportion is
all wrong. And have to start again, grrrrr!. Its very frustrating
indeed, and to start from scratch is not an enthusiasm builder. Now when you
choose a subject, lets say you have seen a photo of a wolf that you have
decided you want to draw
Study it, get it engrained into your mind. I spend much time
just looking at my next piece of work I was going to do. You could be
watching television at night and have the photo near you, and keep having a
look at it. What this does is familiarize you with the form, the
picture itself. It seems to register in your brain and makes the whole
process of drawing a whole lot easier.
Now I have drawn a starting point for you. You can see
the stick figure I have drawn from an artists sketch of a wolf above. This gives you the starting point of where
you will position your wolf on the page. Also the proportions on how to draw wolves.
When you are satisfied with this, you can star to fill out
your form. You can see here that I have marked in heavy lines the guide
lines around the stick figure.
You will probably need time to get this right, this is why I have not drawn the whole outside form. And you see how I have given myself anchors for the wolves outside form. When you are satisfied with this. Only then you can start to fill out the details. See when I have make a marker up near the wolves snout where the finish of the wolves head will be.
Remember that these are guide lines, and keep the rubber at the ready. Because you are going to need it. There will be allot of rubbing out before you feel that you are satisfied with the outside form work.
Now I have been an artist for a long time, and I keep
the rubber near to me at all times. I have seen some artists who have
been able to not use a rubber in their work, though these artists have been
training themselves hard on doing their specific subject for a long time.
There is no margin for errors, and if they make some, they can manipulate
their mistakes, or just have to scrap the drawing and start again. These
artists specialize, say in horses, that's all they do. If you are an all
round artist, you don't have the time to master all subjects and forms.
So practice doing the exercise that I have shown you here.
You may want to start with this picture first. Then graduate on to find your
own picture and follow thought with the same step.
"Rome wasn't built in one day" so its going to take practice. And
you will find it easier as you gain your confidence and your skills.
Don't worry. I am going do do more lessons with you on how
to draw wolves.
We are going to touch on getting the fur realistic, and
which way the fur should lay on the wolf to make it realistic.
Ok... here is the lesson on Fur tutorial
