History of Dogs
Dogs, our faithful companion, where would we have been thought all these ears without them by our side from the beginning of humans on the earth.
Did you know that the faithful canine originated from the wolf, and from then till today man has cross bread them in such a controlled way that we now there are thousands of different breeds today!
O'l Rastus here has undergone quite a transformation with the help of his human counterparts since the days of old.
From protector to hunter, he has stood by man helping him since the days of the Stone Age, where he would hunt with man, to staying around the fire place in the dark of the nights.
The pooch, in its many and varied forms that you see today, all steamed from its distant cousin-the wolf. Right from your little doggie to his bigger counterparts, they still all have something in common. And that is that all the breeds today have that little bit of their ancestors (the wolf) still in them.
They've been with us a very long time, certainly from before the onset of recorded history. The earliest fossil - a jawbone found in Germany - dates from 12,000 BC. From a grave in northern Israel - dating 10,000 BC
They have been domesticated for most of human history and have thus endeared themselves to many over the years. Stories have been told about brave deeds, they served admirably in war or that risked their lives to save persons in danger.
When Pompeii--the Roman community destroyed by Mount Vesuvius in AD 79--was finally excavated, searchers found evidence of a dog lying across a child, apparently trying to protect the youngster. Perhaps few of the millions in the world may be so heroic, but they are still a source of genuine delight to their owners.
They have been with humans since prehistoric times. Over the years they have performed various services. They have pulled sleds over snowy tracts. They have delivered messages, herded sheep and cattle, and even rescued persons trapped in the snow.
It is probable that they were the first animal to be domesticated, most likely around 15,000 years ago. Domestication may have occurred independently in a number of different areas of the world, but genetic tests show that all are descended from an Eurasian stock, even the now extinct pre-Columbian canine of the Americas.
Which ever way we look at our faithful canine friend is here to stay, as a working pooch, companion, or guard dog. Our lives have been made allot richer for having them in our lives.
