Famous Sculptures
Famous sculptures:
So what is it that makes a famous sculpture? have you ever
though about it.
What do you feel when you come across these sculptures, and
why would they be picked to be some of the best sculptures..... for one
thing they are larger than life. And they tell a story. Have a look at each
and feel what is going on in each one.
Lets have a look at each one individually. And learn what it
is to be a sculptor...
Rodin's-
The Kiss:
The Kiss is a sculpture that has stood still in time
itself. Its release of all bonds of society is portrayed. Two lovers that
are only in their own world.
When you think when this sculpture was done. To have two
naked people would have been nothing but shame, if found in a public place.
This is where art seems to jump these boundaries and closed minds in this
era.
From the rough surface of the rock they are sitting on, to
the smooth surfaces of the two lovers. Rodin has brought about texture and
the play of light that creates depth and character to the onlooker.
Leonardo's:
David:
The statue of David towers over his onlookers, one of
Davinci's most celebrated famous sculptures of today. And probably one of the most
well known.
There was also shock from the public at a piece of art so
latently show naked in the days of being conservative. Yet David won owner
his onlookers to become a celebrated masterpiece.
He is anatomically correct, and to look upon him, you could
almost see him breath. Lifelike to a fault, and very meaningful in his
purpose.
The Discus thrower:
A true mark of the athlete on the days where only men could
go and watch the Olympic Games. And all men competed naked as depicted here.
Do you see a celebration of the work an athlete has strived
to achieve the perfect body for his chosen sport.
Capturing the movements as he goes through the process to
through his discuss. Purpose has been captured to an athlete with no other
life except to be the best at his sport.
Again, smooth surfaces have made it possible to see all
detail of this athletes muscles in action.
The Pieta:
Captured, the story that we know so well. And the sculpture
tells all the feelings of the moment.
Folds of cloth have surrounded this sculpture, the surface
of cloth itself has dramatized the sculptures play with light. And give
depth to a sculpture of so much meaning.
The Thinker:
This sculpture reflects back to us our own feelings. The
thoughts that are felt by all of us. Do we wonder what The Thinker is
thinking. Who can we not get caught up in its feelings. Even though it's a
sculpture.
Life has been captured in sculpture like no other form of
art can. Be become drawn to it and feel the sculpture in our minds even
before we have the chance to touch it.
Now that you have had a close look at these famous sculptures, it
does not take much to see why these famous sculptures have become so famous. All
emit a sense of oneness with us. They have captured life in their movements.
No matter if they are in action or just still.
A sculpture needs to feel their own work in their own being.
Not just to touch.
I have found as a sculpture, that I am always striving to
find that feeling of ore when I do a sculpture. And maybe I don't have the
size such as these sculptures to play with.
"Art is never chaste. It ought to be forbidden to ignorant innocents, never
allowed into contact with those not sufficiently prepared. Yes, art is
dangerous. Where it is chaste, it is not art."~ Pablo Picasso
So I must try to capture this magic in a small way. Yet I
keep on reaching out to achieve these feeling that I know make sculpture
what it is.
You, as a sculptor, whether starting your own journey or a
sculptor will also become hungry to strive for in trying to put that magic
in your work. And most of the time you feel you are getting a bit closer.
That's how it is for me......
when you start to feel this
hunger, it can be a bit frustrating, and also rewarding, as you get closer
you what you; as a sculptor is trying convey in your own piece of work. And
what you want other people to see also.
One thing I have found with all these sculptures, is that
they all are sculpted larger than life itself. Their impact alone would
cause someone to draw in their breath. The photo above of the Thinker shows
just how awesome these sculptures would look in real life.
I an just amazed at looking at the photo, than actually
seeing it for myself. When I was in America, I saw a replica of Robins Kiss.
It might have been smaller than the original, yet the size alone brought
about a feeling of goose-bumps, just to walk up to it.
