How to Draw a Horse Head
Draw a Horse Head: Drawing the faces and heads of animals apart from anything really... is not easy. Because you have so much detail to contend with, more than any other part of the animal. Not only detail, there is also the individual animals expression that also needs to be captured. Now I am going to show you how I learnt to draw out the diagram lines for a front horse head sketch and a side head. Here we have a side profile photo of a horses head, and you can see by the lines of the second photo beside it that I have drawn in some guide lines for you. "To draw is to make a shape and movement in time." - Stuart Davis, 1951 This is how I would draw out the basic guide lines for the horses head. The fixture points will guide you to where you will draw in the basic shape of the horses head and now the overall proportions of the horses head is taken care of. If you don't get the proportion right firstly, all the rest of your drawing will be out. Now, guidelines...... These points show you where you will draw in the: eyes, nostrils, and ears of the horse. You just need to use this as a guide and finish off all the
necessary details once you have draw in the horse head. You then proceed to rub
out the guide lines and start to put in more detail into your drawing, and then
your shading. To draw a horse head, you need to get the basic shape drawn first, then draw in where the jaw line will be. After that, you fill in the rest of the details, then rub away the guide lines, and then start shading and of course putting in the filling touches. "By the way, my subscribers to "Pet Art Newsletter" get more tips and tricks on getting the proportions of the horses head right". Now just remember that when you put in these guide lines, don't apply too much pressure on your pencil as this will make line grooves on your drawing surface, and all the rubbing in the world is not going to take away those lines. Because groves in your paper will show through your pencil shading. So I would advise you to use a soft pencil, not hard to draw a horse head . I find that this method works best for me - no circles or triangles, too many lines. As basic as these outline guide lines may be, to draw a horse head, they will guide you on the right track. And not having all those other shapes everywhere, you won't have to get confused when drawing in further details.
To draw a horse head you can mark in the points within the outline guidelines to give you a guide of where you are going to put the rest of your horses details. This way you will have the right starting points for filling in the details. And yes, I will allow you to use a ruler to start of with and get these outlines drawn first as they are straight lines. Though I hope, that as you improve, you will try to draw in these guide lines by freehand. See, I'm not too hard on you am I....
