Cat Faces

Cat Faces:

A cats face is versatile, you can see how they almost look into their soul. And their stare tells us how they are feeling, and their moods - without even seeing the rest of their body.

Well that's how it is for me... I can tell my cats mood, their eyes speak volumes, and their facial features confirms their intentions.

So, do you think this is a plus or a minus in drawing the cat in art? I would defiantly say a plus of course. Though you are going to

have to put more work into drawing the cats face, as all those expressions need to be studied. Which makes the cat a wonderful study for all artists.

Have you seen the drawings of close up studies of the cat? a good artist can capture the cats face in such detail that the cats eyes alone shine back at you.

I have put on this page some examples of close-up pictures of cats, their expressions are all different. Yet will make you think about the impact that each expression will make to your finished work.

Each of these cat faces tells a story, which creates interest. There are many different subjects you could choose. What you need to train yourself, is which ones will make your the best art work.

I feel that a cats portrait is best captured in drawing, painting and pastel more than sculpture. To truly appreciate these cat faces, it is better to stick to the canvas or paper. I am not saying that sculpture does not capture the true cat. Yet it is best to capture the whole cat; even to comical and accentuated styles, does the cat shine out in sculpture.

It doesn't matter if its in black-and-white or color, you will find that both will give you a good portrayal to this beautiful and intelligent pet.

Have a good look at these cat faces, each have their own moods, and will give your work soul. And this is what you need to strive for. If your picture tells what's going on with your cat. People will be drawn to it. I know I am, when I see a good portrait.

I want you to have a look around at pictures, photos. And start to train your mind to what will make a good drawing, painting  etc..., start with cat faces, then go on from there to other animals

It might take a little time, you can even send it to me, if you are unsure, so I can help you out on your decision. I have seen too many portraits of cats that don't seem to have any life to them, no soul, no interest. Wouldn't you rather start on the right foot, before you start your doing your own cat faces.

It is not that there are any good photos or bad photos, they are all of the cat. Yet, when it comes to art, and the subject, some  will make an impact on the viewer, where others wont.

Why... well that's a mystery. I can have a flick through a book, see photos. And then there will be one of two pictures that jump out at me. And I know they will make a good subject to work with.

"Drawing is . . . not an exercise of particular dexterity, but above all a means of expressing intimate feelings and moods." ~ Henri Matisse.

And to make it even more confusing. What will make a good painting, does not necessarily make a good sculpture. It has all to do with angles. Have you ever taken a photo, and found that some proportions seem to be out. The head seems too big, for example.

Yet the cat is all in proportion! so why? Its the angle that the camera has taken your pet, too high gives the impression of a stout cat, too low and the cats may seem to have a head bigger than its body. This is why it is difficult to take photos of art work as well, and artists seem to get professionals to come in and photograph their work for pamphlets, catalogs, and so on.

I remember doing the same. With the digital age now on us, you can look at your photos and delete the bad ones and keep on taking more and more photos. I don't know how many roles of film I went through years ago, not knowing what would come out on film. Hoping for one good photo of your work out of the whole roll. Now I take photos of my own work, thanks to the digital camera.

Here is an example of a finished piece of an artists work, see how the cats face speaks to you from the canvas.

Just remember.... it takes time to learn what picture makes a good drawing, so when you have time, practice. Have a look at different pictures on the net too. There are many different photos for you to judge from. I'm not saying that its going to be easy, though developing your inner artist takes time. And don't threat if you struggle a bit when starting out in your art. There might be more things to learn than you imagined. That's what makes art so important in society, we are artists in our own field. And the road may be a little bumpy, it makes you think and appreciate it all the more. Because you are acquiring a skill that will give you a whole different outlook in the world you live. Really...
