Cartoon Cats

Cartoon Cats:

About the funniest take offs I have seen in pets, is of course the Cat and the Dog.

Both are just as funny and it may be just the hilarious antics they get up to in the way they have such expressions and actions that we can only admire. And yet on these actions alone,  we tend to imitate them in art.

The cat for instance has made their name for their allure and most elegant ways the way they conduct their selves.

Yet there are those moments that they are just caught off guard, or when they are in a muddle, we feel the urge to put these moments into our art.

Cartoon Cats have graced our comic books and televisions for many years now and we love them. With characters such as "Top Cat" that leader of a gang cartoon cat, (which I used to watch after coming home from school).

Or Garfield, he has been around for a while now yet his antics are so "typical cat" that we will see him around for probably many years to come. I could go on and on....

Now were getting away from just the sketches, and were going into the accentuations of the cat.

"No masterpiece was ever created by a lazy artist." ~ Salvador Dali

Where we as artists, have had that royal seal of "The Artists License", to do whatever we darn well want to.....

This is where we can take the most cherished of assets that a cat has, and accentuate their characteristics.

We can take their best characters about them and just make them more refined to the point that we have changed the rules of art such with cartoon cats.

We are now using the basics of what we have learned as true artists; and extended it to Original Fine Art.

  • We can now move on and break all the rules.... that's right!

  • We have now the ability to change a form, to accentuate it, and yet.... to still have it recognizable to it's true character.

We now rely on our own creative abilities to change what is.

Think its easy? no.

That's why you need to learn the elements and basics of art firstly in order to take that next step.

"Remember........ The Artists License"

For example, like the cats grace and features.

I have seen, in fact brought, lovely little sculpture characters of cats myself. And you see some lovely paintings of cats in the most sweetest shapes and colours.

Yes... you can change so much in art if you want to.

Artist: Andrea Balch

Just to give you an example. This is on drawing I did a little while back before I even thought about putting characters such as this on the page.

His name is "PUSS" as you can see.

Have a look at how you can capture nature in it's simplicity when drawing the things around him. You don't have to go to town. Sometimes you can keep your drawings simplified as I have done here.

Yet, you can see the full character of this cat, the way his laying, and the purpose of his a gender - to occupy his owners writing desk in the study.

If a picture tells a story within the picture itself, all the better. You can see that PUSS is cheeky, though also following the characteristics that a cat does at "nap time".

Which is for most cats much of the day, except for food and play, and curiosity of course .

Yes that's right, I have cats, love them, and having them around the house always helps me when I want to study the characteristics of their character in order to put it onto canvas or in sculpture.

Now, I could have made this picture into a painting or a watercolor. Though I feel "PUSS" is just fine in style, medium and scene.

There's nothing to stop you from playing around with your sketches; firstly to get the sort of cat you would like.

And I will give you different example sketches as I go on in this area of our cartoon cats here. You just need to give me some time to get them done.

But for now on, I will also be selling some of my art now and again. So why not "PUSS", so everyone can enjoy him.

So I have put some items up such as mugs and cards, if you would like "PUSS" in your own home too.
